Suspended Hering to Miss Grand Final

17th September, 2001 -

Champion Burnie goalkicker Andrew Hering was tonight suspended for two matches and will miss Saturday's Grand Final against North Launceston. He was supposed to appear last week, but couldn't due to work commitments, and so he appered tonight. Hering was reported early on in the second semi-final at West Park Oval for striking Ulverstone's Darren Jones. He has kicked 104 goals this season, and Burnie will consider appealing against the suspension.

Ulverstone's Scott Blair
Wins 2001 Darrel Baldock Medal

16th September, 2001 -

Ulverstone's Co-Captain Scott Blair won today's 2001 Darrel Baldock Medal for the best and fairest in the NTFL at the Albert Hall in Launceston. Blair won with 18 votes, edging out favourite Jason French (North Launceston) and Ulverstone's other Co-Captain Simon Walmsley by one vote.

Huge West Park Oval Attendance

10th September, 2001 -

A huge attendance of 2,301 attended yesterday's second Semi Final at West Park Oval between Burnie and neighbouring town Ulverstone. The crowd is the biggest of the season to date, beating York Park's 1,500 for a few night games earlier on in the year, the 1,200 for the Elimination Final last week and 1,200 for a night game at West Park Oval between North Launceston and Burnie very early this season.

Shocking rainfalls and wind probably kept a few hundred fans away from attending Saturday's first Semi Final at Youngtown between North and South Launceston. 1,023 brave fans did turn up for the game, but a crowd of about 2,000 - 2,500 was probably what the NTFL was looking at.

North Star Under Injury Scare

4th September, 2001 -

North Launceston star Brendon Bolton injured his knee in the 1st Qualifying Final against Ulverstone on Saturday, and looks unlikely to play against South Launceston in the all-important Semi-Final at Youngtown on Saturday.
Bolton returned to the Bombers with Paul McKendrick and Shane Wager for the NTFL finals series from the VFL, with Bolton's games missed through injuries meaning he played few enough games in the VFL to be eligible to play in the NTFL finals.

Burnie Seeks New Coach

30th July, 2001 -

The Burnie Dockers are on the lookout for a new coach next season, with current coach Mick McGuane heading back to Melboune next year searching for an AFL assistant job. The Dockers are likely to not have a playing coach in replace of McGuane, but are looking for one with coaching experience.

McGuane has led the young Dockers to no losses so far this year, and it seems to be a fait accompli for them to win the flag, with West Park Oval already named as host of the second semi final.

North Launceston dominates in Match of the Day

28th July, 2001 -

The North Launceston Bombers thumped the heartless Devonport Magpies in the unofficial NTFL website match of the day today. The final scores were: North Launceston 25.16.166 to 7.9.56.

New Northern League Given the Thumbs Down

24rd July, 2001 -

Plans for a new Launceston-based football league have been turned down after a meeting of 75 North Launceston members decided that they would prefer to remain in the NTFL.

The league was to be made up of 'old NTFA clubs' North Launceston, Launceston, South Launceston (East Launceston and City South merged), Scottsdale and Longford, with George Town and the successful Hillwood also being expected to join.

NTFL Seeks State Final Against SFL

23rd July, 2001 -

The NTFL wants to play a State final between its premier team and the Southern Football League's premiersip team. Since the Statewide League began in 1987, regional leagues haven't played the state final because of the SWL. In June, the NTFL defeated the SFL in its represenitive game by one point, but the NTFL want to face the SFL more than once a year.

If thereis a new Launceston area-based league next year, then there could be a state final featuring the three premier teams from the NTFL, SFL and the Launceston based-league lasting four weeks as it was before the SWL.

Burnie Breaks NTFL Scoring Record

21st July, 2001 -

It was today that history was made. At West Park Oval, West Park Road, Burine, the Burine Dockers scored the NTFL record score of 49.35.329 to a dismal 1.1.7 from current bottom-of-the-ladder Smithton.

Burnie remains undefeated on top of the ladder undefeated after round 15 and with the huge percentage of 262.6, it would be fair to say that they haven't been challenged strongly this year. The North Launceston Bombers are second with 13 wins, both losses to Burine. Although the Bombers will be strengthened with the return of VFL players such as Nathan Howard, Michael Praciak, Paul McKendrick and many more players who will add experince to the 'Baby Bombers', it's difficult to see them defeating the record breaking Dockers at Latrobe in late September.

The Burnie score broke the NTFL record (the NTFL was formed in 1987 out of the NWFU clubs who didn't make the Statewide League) high score, the highest aggregate score for one game (336) and the highest ever winning margin (322). Andrew Herring's 17 goals equalled the most ever by one player in an NTFL game, equalling Wynyard's Kevin "Coco" Taylor against George Town in 1987.

The record that Smithton broke (except for the biggest losing margin) was the least amount of shots at goal, their two shots broke the 0.3.3 by East Devonport in 1987.
