WELCOME TO THE GOLDEN GATE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUEHello to all in beautiful Tasmania, and in particular the football community. My name is Leigh Barnes and I played for North Launceston and Burnie in the NTFA & NWFU in the late 70’s, early 80’s and I would like to extend a welcome to one and all on behalf of the Golden Gate Australian Football League (GGAFL). Yes it may be hard to believe, but our great game is alive and well in the USA, with the California Australian Fooball League being around for some time, and now a brand new league in San Francisco. The GGAFL, under the auspicies of the Santa Cruz Roos, a long time member of the CAFL, kicks off this year with four teams in the greater Bay Area, San Francisco, Marin, Oakland and San Jose. The teams are made up of a mixture of ex pats and Yankee converts, which tends to lead to pretty fast and open games, and, of course, in the best of Aussie traditions, the after match bbq and social interaction, is always the highlight of the day. Many of us ex players can now keep tabs on the goings on of football in Tasmania, via the internet and this great website, and we would like to invite you to do the same. Simply log on to www.santacruzroos.com and following the humble beginnings of the GGAFL. In addition, if ever you are over this way, we would love to see you. Whether for a day, a week or longer, bring you boots, pull on a jumper and experience the fun of football in the States. Good luck to all teams competing in their various competions around Northern Tasmania, and many thanks to Marcus, for maintaining a tremendous website, to at least keep the bouts of homesickness to a minimum, during the footy season.
Cheers,
