York Park - Home of the BombersYork Park has always been the home of football in Launceston and a recent redevelopment has made it AFL standard. The $6.5 million redevelopment built a 3000 capacity grandstand in replace of the old 'away' team's changerooms, a big new electronic scoreboard which can show the scores of two games at once aswell as the time gone in the quarter, the time, statistics and messages. The redevelopment also built five new AFL light towers which can light up the ground as bright as the MCG and can be lit at three levels - training, local matches and AFL matches. The redevelopment also built a huge new surface bigger than the MCG which David Parkin described as 'the best in Australia'. A new hill was built on the railway (outer) wing which can be covered in portable seats for extra seating and was specially designed so that temporary stands, viewing platforms and semi-trailers can be placed behind it to increase the capacity.York Park has a great history (it also started as a swamp, then a tip!) with the biggest and best game ever played there in 1960 when Tasmania defeated Victoria for the first time by 7 points in front of a then-record crowd of 15,600. A new redevelopment has started at a cost of $1 million which will build 6,000 open seats around the outer wing and behind both goals. |
